Numbers and Algebra
Number MUST take precedent in your Mathematic programme - 80% minimum for Years 1 & 2.
By the end of Year 1 students should be able to...
- Recognise, read, write, count and order numbers to 20.
- Recognise odd and even numbers
- Describe basic relationships (bigger, smaller, half) between numbers (to 20).
- Make estimates and to solve problems by using the number knowldege.
- Use a variety of strategies ( including recall, working from known calculations, using equipment and calculators) to add and subtract numbers to 10.
- Read prices in cents or dollar values.
- Model and explain addition and subtraction using sets to 10.
By the end of Year 2 students should be able to:
- Read, write, count, order whole numbers to 100.
- Explain the meaning of digits in whole numbers to 20.
- Give examples of odd and even numbers (to 100),
- Recognise common coins and notes to $20.
- Use mental strategies to add and subtract numbers to 20, and recall the multiplication facts for 2 and 10.
- Identify whole numbers and basic fractions and give examples of a 1/2 & 1/4.
Stands:
- Use the language of measurement (big, small, longer, shorter, heavier and lighter) and non-standard units to describe relationships between objects and things.
- Identify common measuring devices and what they are used for.
- Identify and sequence the days of the week, and tell the time using hours.
- Describe, sort and classify shapes and objects using attributes such as size, shape colour, texture, number and mass.
- Follow instructions to locate objects and describe the position as being above, below, on.
- Describe symmetrical patterns and move objects and their body through half and quarter turns
